How to Choose the Right Mud Kitchen: A Parent’s Guide to Sizes, Heights & Upgrades

Looking for the perfect outdoor play setup for your child? A mud kitchen is one of the best ways to spark creativity, sensory play, and endless fun—right in your own backyard.

At RBJ Woodworks, we offer handcrafted wooden mud kitchens in a variety of sizes, heights, and features—so you can find the right fit for your child, your space, and your budget.

Here’s a quick guide to help you choose the best mud kitchen for your family.

🪵 Step 1: Choose the Right Size

We offer four size options depending on how many kids will be playing, how much space you have, and what kind of setup you're envisioning:

Compact (35" wide)
Perfect for smaller yards or patios. The base model is simple, budget-friendly, and fully customizable.

Standard (53" wide)
Our most popular size! Great balance of play space and footprint.

Large (59" wide)
Ideal for siblings or shared use. Offers more room for collaborative play.

XL (65" wide)
Our biggest model, with maximum counter space and room for features and add-ons.

📏 Step 2: Pick the Right Counter Height

Short (20") – Great for toddlers ages 1.5–3
Medium (23") – Ideal for kids 3–6
Tall (27") – Best for older kids or long-term growth

Most families choose medium height for flexibility across multiple age groups.

⚙️ Step 3: Choose Your Features & Add-Ons

All kitchens start with a solid wood frame—but features vary by size.

✅ Standard, Large & XL Models Include:

  • Painted & sealed finish
  • Backsplash with hooks
  • Wooden burners & knobs
  • Oven door
  • Sink with sprayer (garden-hose-ready)

🧰 Compact Model (Base) Includes:

  • Unfinished wood
  • No sink, burners, or oven door
  • 7 hooks on backsplash

🧩 All Kitchens Are Fully Customizable with Add-Ons

Here are some popular upgrades:

  • Dry sink basin only

  • Rechargeable or manual water pump (great if you don’t want a hose connection)

  • Painted or weather-sealed finish

  • Oven door, burners, and knobs

  • Cedar wood upgrade

  • Cabinet doors or extra shelving

  • And many more!
